Do I have to be in shape to start fitness?

One of the most common things we hear from people is…We aren’t in good enough shape to do fitness!

I think this common misconception comes from the fact that the majority of the people who are with us for a long time do end up being fit!  However, the vast majority of the people who walk through our doors have normal, everyday lives outside of the fitness gym. We have mothers of multiple children, people over 60, lawyers, doctors, nurses, police officers, business executives, and every other job that you can think of come through our classes every day.  Very few of these people will ever compete in the sport of fitness.  They just want a fun way to get and stay in shape day in and day out.

We don’t expect the people walking through our door to be high level athletes.  We just expect that they work hard.  Our coaches all have multiple certifications in fitness and the fitness world and are trained to work with people of all ability levels.  It’s their job to modify or scale any workout for anyone and they do it every class, everyday for people.  If you walk into any fitness class at 13 Stripes you will see examples of this in action.

We also don’t just throw new members right into class and expect that they will keep up with people who have been there for years.  It is one of the reasons we require Foundations sessions for members new to fitness.  We believe that by working with people individually, we can teach them the necessary tools and introduce new equipment and movements in a progression that allows everyone to be successful.  We listen to your goals and work with you to help you get there, whether it is to lose weight, be able to chase grandchildren around, or compete one day.
